And with a va va voom that is more than any come back, 'tis the World that they desire.

First European dates as a proper line up in over twenty years and a mini "guerilla raid" on thee UK, outing newbies maybe such as Ape-X, Love Will Kill You, We Are All Gods and more (as well as all those black techno minimalist numbers), ... which shall be accompanied by new release action ... Not sure what year this one actually came out, I suspect around 1983-4.

Very very exceptional and little known French goth / cold wave band, heavily influenced by The Cure c. Faith I would guess, but not a clone act, and genuinely, authentically cold.

I can feel a few more like this coming up in the pipeline over the next few weeks. It is winter after all.

Very rare treat here for Yule / Crapmas, whatever you want to name it ...

Pretty self explanatory this one, and without a doubt one of my all time favourite bands, and a band whose music saved my skin (literally - seriously) when I was younger, through their depth, intensity and raw emotion, this is a collection of rare, previously unheard and session recordings (most of which were for the Janice Long Show, who adored the band, quite rightly so) ... the songs - all 16 of them, are all properly tagged, so enjoy, unearth, and embrace. Happy Wotsit.

Great, dark, Belgian cold wave, with a bit of a past. Their first release by all accounts was a series of out-take tape cuttings in a 7" sleeve, which were totally unplayable.

This is still however a pretty legendary piece, before their descent into EBM territory (which I sort of get, but don't really like nonetheless), and fits nicely with releases by their label-mates AA and The Cultural Decay, along with the output of fellow Belgians De Brassers, Gruppenbild, Siglo XX etc.

More of a heavy Xmal influence on this single than on their somewhat straightforward punk / new wave sounding LP (agreed Mr Hall), which certainly does no harm as far as I am concerned. Classic piece of German gloom wave of the time, à la Camp Sophisto, Blue Kremlin.

Another one from the '90's. Taliesin Echoes was Veto from Garten Kirkhof and Theo, and were heavily influenced by Cocteau Twins and more importantly Tones On Tail, which comes through in this one off single. Very little information about the band other than this document, and they split shortly afterwards, as so many bands of this ilk sadly were prone to do.

Awkward, dismal, and downright weird, this 7" is something else. Never heard a cover of Be Bop A Lula like this. The A Side is excellent, almost ritualistic, doom ridden fare, as you would expect from Return To The East by now, I would hope.

The Shining were a UK goth band, from Birmingham, cold, synth-heavy, droning, drowning and quite bleakly glorious all in all. I remember they were active again around 1990 - 1991, and are now generally totally unknown, outside of a few people who were around that scene and associated at that time.

Recorded on the Tocsin Tour 1984, both live artifacts clearly document a different and better time for music, one less swamped, holier even, bereft of stupid sympathies, or desperate lip services, which comes out raw and loud and strong in the music, pure and surging with real life and feeling. Look, listen and learn children.

Maybe it was all a dream and we woke up screaming. Yes, who gave us this today. Some very very harmful nanny, and her gang.

This one gives me great great pleasure to post. Out of all the bands from this period, perhaps Rosegarden Funeral remained the most mysterious. A Yorkshire phenomenon, from the last wave of first generation British Goth, serious, excellent, and literally, previously totally unknown ... but remembered with fondness. Often for many too damn gloomy and real for their own good, they dissolved before the tedious 'Goth wars' of the 1990's and retreated gracefully.

I can't really go into too many details here. As I said the band were not just shrouded in smoke, but also mystery ha ha! Just listen ....

Oft neglected at the time, and compared unfairly / favourably (?) with Curve for the most part, Sunshot were a great band, but stood in a strange place in a land full of boxes. If you've never heard them before expect a 50 / 50 split of despair and aggression, some influence of Young Gods, even early early All About Eve (before they became tie dyed), and received some press attention, scooping a number of prestigious support slots including The Sisters Of Mercy in 1992, which was a picture to watch, mainly for the looks of horror upon the audience's faces. Sadly they disappeared. A band that could have been, should have been etc etc.

It has been long overdue since I posted, primarily as I was saturated with new music, and almost felt I was losing sensitivity to it, and of secondary reasoning was a slew of jumped up precious little people attempting to dictate how to do this 'blog' : anything ranging from telling me what is too precious to share (Artica of all things fucking purleeze!!), through to other very tedious, mind numbing and intensely boring shit, etc. You get the picture. If you want to do that kind of thang become a p a r e n t (heaven forbid), or an autocratic dictator of a banana republic, in short 'fuck yourself'. BYE BYE.

Visitors released a brace of three seven inches between 1979 and 1981, and dissolved. They played with The Freeze (pre Cindytalk) and Ultravox I believe, morphing from a quite agitated postish punk sound to a more grim sounding and claustrophobic little beast, roughly the same time as Joy Division mutated out of Warsaw. As a lot of great bands did, most of whom are annoyingly compared to the omnipotent Joy Division - how original! This reminds me more of Crisis' transformation into Death In June, definitely an influence on the young ears of Tom Ashton, from The March Violets, prior to the formation of their sound, and a group that now are sadly virtually unknown. If you look on discogs under 'Visitors' you have to wade through about 19 different crappy evangelical, folk rock, dubstep, dunno what the fuck it is' to find these rather precious jewels.

So if you wish to they are affectionately catalogued 'Visitors (8)'. How charming is that?

Another good one from Jason Hall. Indeed Pink Ribbons does get under the skin, in exactly that infectious Skeletal Family cum The Veil way as described. No other information about the band I could find, but there was also another American band of the same name who cropped up 13 years after this release, which may or may not be the same one. This can be seen here.

Solid great goth obscurity from that era.

Artica were a band that had strong moments early on in their tape career, but which fizzled out into the humdrum when along came those bastards production & distribution - of that unpleasant and tatty 'goff' variety (pfssht!).

These, their first two releases have moments of charm, intensity and contained emotion, that swells and pops relatively well, at the right times. Not too bad when you consider that in the British Isles fat men were pretending to be vampires, and were having babies, with umbrella wielding twots, with goofy teeth. Ahh the hysterectomy of it all, eeew!

I found this upon recommendation, on the excellent Terminal Escape blog, a cornucopia for obscure tape fantasists, like lonesome here, and I hope that no one minds me lifting this rather excellent post as it is the predecessor to the two vinyl releases Enjoy and Hear The Children, which were posted here, with quite some lengthy write up, not too long ago.

I have a vague inkling too that the female voice that punctuates this even more gloom sodden, beautiful fare, may be the inimitable Andrea James, of NER label-mates, and tape culture progenitors Somewhere In Europe, two bands that sounded even more raped and vampirised than Death In June.

While we are on a roll we seem to be on a roll, and this goes rather perfectly with the last couple of platters. Again huge unreserved thanks to Sorrow Vomit, for providing this exceptionally elusive document. As always appreciated.

By far the strongest release by Swan Death, who along with Mad Dwarf, with whom I believe they shared members early on, represent the murkiest and most shocking edge of 90's / late 80's goth, brought courtesy of a small home grown scene in some of the most disparate Belgian villages, which makes this tale even curiouser. Bare, hysterical and monstrous at times, all the time, this is like a depressive slab of executioner's axe coming down on innocent limbs. Again a shame in many ways that this sort of thing has always been 'too difficult' to 'catch on' but what the fuck, it's great great great and I love it.

Another big one that has been on such heavy rotation lately that it has given me carpet burns. Primarily the brainchild of Amor Fati, whose own early releases are also nearly this great.

Essentially tough DIY goth music, bordering on the experimental and certainly sitting at the heavier end of the spectrum, all wrapped up in delicious home made packaging, with suitably bleak propaganda inserted inside. This band was so infinitely cool that they even made their own hand painted t shirts - yes 'painted'!

I don't think anything has blown me away as much as this record in quite some time. Actually I know this to be the case. Like an even more snowballing Deception Bay, a holocaust of anguish and confusion (Imminent Artillery really being the most consummate track here). This might sound pretentious but hey, I really don't care. Hard to express my love for Beg For Eden.

This was their sole release, and I believe that both members went into more experimental noise territory, and that the vocalist may have committed suicide.

Again many thanks to the wonderful Sorrow Vomit for the tip (I now have the vinyl thankfully) and this superb quality rip.

THE 13TH (PART DEUX) : THE MARCH VIOLETSSSSSS

THE MARCH VIOLETS will be playing in London on the 13th of November this year. A few months ago, we published an interview with Simon D, co-founder, of possibly the most idiosyncratic of all goth bands, and now the mic. is over to Rosie, who will continue this series of interviews in run up to the gig and their much awaited first album.

So Rosie?
.. and here is my take on the whole shenanigans, to be taken with a glug of cocoa and a pinch of seasalt.

When you formed The March Violets, what was the climate like in Leeds, in the UK, and to what extent did that have an impact on what you were doing?

Once Upon A Leeds, 1981. A time of dodging bombs that went off in my street as the North of England welcomed the arrival of Thatcher in its customary forthright style. Simon, Laurence, Tom and myself were all at College there, sharpening our pencils, eager to imbibe the benefits of the higher education system before it was restricted to people with money. We even lived close together. I was at number 4, Simon next door at number 5. We didn’t have vast reserves of inherited wealth (see above), so we rehearsed in Simon’s flat, which he shared with Craig Addams from the Sisters. Later, Tom moved in with him. One big happy family. Erm.

I was also dealing with coming out - bang in the middle of 80s feminism; when a ‘real’ dyke had cropped hair, wore dungarees, and eschewed the company of the enemy (men). As a female with big hair, lipstick, and a penchant for tight leather pants my timing couldn’t have been better.

I remember watching a live video, and you stated that you weren’t punk, and you definitely weren’t positive. What were your thoughts on the kind of ‘scene’ / ‘movement’ that you were somewhat lumped in with at that point in time?

Despite all of the above, I felt like I was in the best place in the world to be alive. There was this new scene that had no name: anything could happen, and felt like it would, any minute now. It was a jumble of punk, glamour, romanticism, death, darkness and glitter. Hard to believe it was happening in that mix for the first time – I felt like I’d come home.

It’s been said a gazillion times, but the word ‘goth’ wasn’t wallpapered to it till later. Not that I have a problem with the word. I couldn’t give a monkey’s what you call me. Having spent 2009 dealing with, and beating, throat cancer (that’s one reason why we were so quiet after the Homecoming gig) I’ve got far more important things to kvetch about than labels.

But, back to the 80s. I remember a trip to London. I couldn’t understand why no-one had pointy boots and backcombed hair, and were still listening to what they were told to by the music press. I’d assumed everyone was, or wanted to be, part of this scene. It helped me appreciate right then just how special Leeds (& the rest of Yorkshire too) was. Sure, it contributed to goth’s perceived ‘unfashionableness’. Because it didn’t start, or have its heart, in London it was seen as uncool by people who spend their time wedged in the sphincter-like grip of the M25.

Another thing that strikes me about the band, is its carnivorous, cum malevolent sense of fun. Could you explain how people in general reacted to this, and what it actually brought to the band?

Si and I share a macabre, indeed warped, sense of humour, so that was bound to be deep in the blood and bone of the Violets. I’ve never been one for earnest, meaningful blathering on. Bizarre and twisted: of course. And as for the notion that goff has no sense of humour – you’re clearly hanging around with the wrong goffs. Goth / deathrock (choose your word) is always going to get sneered at. Luckily, the people who sneer are types who lie awake at night terrified that they aren’t cool enough. Goth rankles because after 25 years it won’t go away. And because it doesn’t care.

You had a vague affiliation with The Sisters Of Mercy to begin with, as you released your first two singles on Merciful Release, and played live with them reasonably regularly: did you see yourselves very differently to each other, and indeed in relation to everyone else, and what happened after that relationship ceased to be?

What he said! If Si says he knew nothing about the music business, then I knew even less. I look back at my naivety about, well, everything with astonishment. The Violets just ‘did’ stuff without kowtowing to any notion of How Things Ought To Be Done.

Andrew gave the Violets a lot of support right from the start. He spent a few days in the studio with us when we were putting together the Radiant Boys EP – literally days: we slept on the floor and only left the building for more beer and cigarettes. Ah! The glamour of showbiz. It seemed a natural progression that we would release our first singles on Merciful Release... why ever not?

When I think about The March Violets personally, I think of possibly the most unique and exciting band from that time, dealing readily with subject matter that no-one else touched, with a poetry that no-one achieved nearly half as well, and a band bursting with charisma and opportunity, yet people were intimidated and confused by what you were doing - why?

Ok, so we dealt with untouchable subject matter and people were intimidated and confused. You’ve really answered your own question haven’t you?

I honestly didn’t think anyone would remember the Violets in 1988, let alone 2010. I’m knocked out that people who weren’t out of nappies in 1981 think we rocked. In fact, the press say far nicer things about the band now than in the 1980s. We had our supporters back then, sure; but a lot of the mainstream / hip / cool press thought we were too weird, too grungy; and goddam it all to Hell, wore too much black.

By 1984 a lot of things were happening for me: I didn’t like the way I could see the band going. Si is right: there was a lot of pressure, within and without, pushing for the Violets to have a more accessible, pop sound, like a low-rent U2. It wasn’t what I wanted. I liked the way the way we’d had always done something different, something surprising. I didn’t want to become mediocre, the same as another hundred Kim-Wilde-a-like pop groups.

I was getting increasingly frustrated. I looked and sounded powerful on-stage, but it was a different story off. Nuff said. I had the feeling I had seen the best there was to see of the Violets, and I guess I wanted out before the grenades started flying. I made a tough decision. In late 1984 (not long after Snake Dance) I left the band and went to work in Africa, giving rise to all kinds of fabulous myths about where/why I’d gone. My favourite has to be that I was a ‘missionary’. For which branch of Bad Religion I have no idea…

Ok, some shift to the left now, with the ‘modern section’ …
The gig in 2007 was a resounding success. How did you feel stepping back onto that stage again after so long apart, and away from the music / gigging arena?

It was sodding bloody bastarding hard work, so it’s gratifying that so many hundreds of people turned up and clearly enjoyed themselves so much. I really haven’t read a bad word about the show, and that is a thing to behold. What an astonishing crowd. I echo Si’s thanks, loud and clear.

Si, Tom and I had kept loosely in touch over the years; and then in 2006 the loosely started to tighten up, and the rest is history. It’s a strange to discover that you still get along with someone after 25 years of not seeing them.

I loved being onstage with the band again. Then again, I’ve never stopped performing since I quit. I’ve been involved with various theatrical and musical projects in the past however many years, and currently work as a singer, performer and compere. So I’m no stranger to performance, and it shows.

‘Rosie' questions :

What were the actual reasons that resulted in you leaving the band
back in 1983?

The ‘actual reasons’ I left the March Violets were answered above in the penultimate question.

Did you have any feelings about your, replacement in the group?

You certainly seem to be chalk and cheese for obvious reasons ...

Kind of ditto re: the chalk & cheese part about replacement, really. As I said, the band was being pushed in a different direction. I left the band after Snake Dance (yes, it is my vocal) & then Cleo was brought on board after I left. So I didn’t have any ‘feelings’ about it or her… I think I met her once, to be honest, and only because she was going out with one of the members of Living in Texas, who we brought onto the Rebirth label.

What tips could you give anyone if they were deciding to start a
band today .. how could you put them off entirely as they are bound to
be bloody awful anyway, ... maybe ....?

Er… never sure about offering ‘tips’! Why on earth would anyone want to take notice? It’s only my opinion, and everyone’s entitled to their own. We just ‘did’ it without paying particular attention to the way we were ‘supposed’ to do it, and I guess that’s what I’ve continued to do ever since. Perhaps that’s the only tip worth offering? If you want to form a band, just do it, and f*ck what received wisdom tells you. You might be crap, you might be brilliant: more importantly you might enjoy yourself.

Another aspect of your persona and your creative expression, is the
everdastardly Rosie Lugosi : how do Rosie Garland and Rosie Lugosi
differ, and what do you think they say to people who get them for the
personalities that they are?

The ever- dastardly Rosie Lugosi? She’s a performance persona, an alter-ego.

Clearly she’s an exaggerated (honest!) part of me, but equally she isn’t the whole. She’s quite demanding, so there’s a clear demarcation line between how I am on-stage compared to off-stage. It’d be exhausting and limiting to be performing her the entire time.

However, she’s a lot of fun to bring out of the dressing up box and play with for a night. She satisfies my need to perform, to dress up, to be rude to people, and get paid for it. I’m slowly returning to touring after an 18 month period dealing with cancer, as I said above. I’ve finished the New York leg of my 2010 Spank the Yanks tour, and am off to the Bay Area in August. Watch this space for updates about gigs in New Orleans…

When Rosie Lugosi is put back in the dressing up box I re-emerge as Rosie Garland. I’ve never stopped writing: short stories, poetry, novels. My latest novel is with my agent, but as I am not a ghostwritten footballer or a ‘celeb’ it’s not going to be an easy ride getting it published. I’ve had numerous short stories in anthologies, plus four solo collections of poetry, the latest only a couple of months ago: Things I Did While I Was Dead

Sure, there are some people who only see the character of Rosie Lugosi and don’t bother to get behind it – c’est la vie. It doesn’t give me sleepless nights.

Were you more intimidated playing in your own old band again, thank you are, or have been, when you perform solo? What did you think whenyou walked on stage with Tom, Si and The Machine again in 2007?

Intimidated? Moi? That one made me laugh.

I’ve never been intimidated by performance – If I was, I’m pretty sure I’d have given up an extremely long time ago. I have a low threshold for doing things I don’t like. So, if I didn’t like performing, I wouldn’t do it. Why would a person put her of himself through that?

I enjoyed the Homecoming gig in 2007. A lot. Hundreds of people, all happy to see us back on stage, and none of them shy about showing their appreciation. What’s not to like?

Finally, any advice or Enochian secrets that you would like to
impart with those terrible consumers I drip feed with this grim and
obscure esoteric drivel at least once per week?

Enochian secrets? We’re back to the ‘tips’ thing again – anyhow.

When faced with a decision, I ask myself the question – how long will I be dead? It helps get me off my arse. I have always been a bit of a ‘if not now, when?’ gal, and the cancer sure put things in startlingly clear perspective. There’s nothing like getting a glimpse of your sell-by date to provide a boot up the backside.

Time spent playing computer games is time you’ll never get back. Go write a poem, or an opera, or form a band, or knit a new manifesto. That’s it folks.

Yes, I am not dead yet, but it has been a while.

Something nice, for the weekend, which continues that vein of Spray Pals, Your Funeral, Endgame etc, is Young Weasels, the first release I believe on Local Anesthetic (Your Funeral), and which was also produced by the somewhat legendary Bob Drake.

Essentially scratchy and somewhat gloomy, it sits well with these other releases, and is definitely a testament to better and more imaginative and adventurous times, which sadly a lot of the older music on this page happens to be.

Which sort of fits in nicely with the last few posts, and what they represent ...

This was first posted on Fritz die Spinne's blog, as I sent him the penultimate copy of this that I own, which is extremely rare these days obviously, but fortunately I do retain my own personal copy, in all its poorly Xeroxed, home made glory.

We were extremely young when we made this, and were very affected by the world, a world we felt we had little part of, a planet wasted and a dominant species wasted on us. We stayed indoors a lot, read difficult and mind / life altering French literature, smoked a lot of cigarettes, took as much speed as was affordable, and concentrated on this with our curtains drawn. Rehearsals were like military operations, the manifesto we wrote criminalised anything resembling a jam, it was serious, cathartic (although only for the duration), intense, and powerful, we learned how to write songs there on the spot, with no external assistance, so learning as much skill in playing an instrument, or singing, or programming our quintessentially primitive drum machine, as was necessary to release a demo tape, and play a few shows, highwire, and histrionic affairs, which felt like an orgasm and a frozen shoulder. The ache would snowball and we knew it.

We were influenced primarily by bands such as The March Violets, Xmal Deutschland, Sex Gang Children, Malaria, Virgin Prunes, Bauhaus, and The Sisters Of Mercy c. The Reptile House E.P., along with newer stuff too like Cranes, Sleeping Dogs Wake, The Sugarcubes, Swans and Big Black, with an unhealthy nod to Psychedelic Furs, Bowie, Nico, The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and early Roxy. Chris, the bassist, was obsessed and dominated by his passions for Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Dead Can Dance. Live we used a tape player, a duo of relentless smoke machines, a few strobes and were bathed in blacklight, not that we were allowed to do so often as the legions of clones and our own crushing introspections forbade it.;

On listening to this now, it still stands the test of time and is as equally fresh and intense as bands from the same period such as Altered States, Rosetta Stone, Sleeping Dogs Wake, Into A Circle, Bible For Dogs, Rosegarden Funeral, Cristabelle Children and Hex were / are still upon listening to.

Following on from the last post this seems fitting, another great great band, too different for the then largely homogenised dumplings who were asphyxiating the genre, by poorly emulating either Fields Of The Nephilim, Sisters (how original), The Mission (surely against UN humane conventions), or even God forbid, the latterly atrocious All About Eve (which makes me rush for the Gaviscon just vaguely contemplating such an atrocity) ...

Difficult? Maybe, if you didn't /don't have it already inside, and if so then why did you bother? Ahhh .. the sense of belonging, a hip phenomenon after the self destructions of the original contenders, had provided suitable testament, the nausea of the resulting generic apocalypse, the sheer desire to be powerful through the act of adamant stoicism to remaining acceptably turgid ...

Cat Fud were a blast of pure ice, a dead dream hallucination, some modern witchery, and thus disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. I have such respect for them, and artists like these, who sacrificed everything for such humble contribution to the essence of expression, the sustenance of culture that will always ignore and reject such generosity. A permanent slash of stain on the fabric of a precious secret something. An energy that cannot disappear eventually. Crepuscular and potent. A jet corpuscle. Purity. Beauty. Pain. Existence.

Incessant, moribund, ecstatic hopeless, pristine and terrible, few acts at the time got close to the consumptive and self immolating intensity of this unique and troubled band. The process emotionally and near mortally compromised a succession of its members, within a relatively short period of time, which resulted in drastic personnel changes between the few releases they produced.

Confidently I can state that they were certainly the most precious Italian band of this oeuvre, are impossibly difficult to define or explain, and have / had that rare ability to rip the listener apart from the inside, so be warned. Unfortunately I haven't got the first cassette to share here 'R.I.P.', which was released in 1991, under the initial moniker of simply 'Storm'. I suppose they could be comparable in some ways to other second generation artists, who embraced the more taboo left field of this form of music, such as Artica, Cat Fud, Swan Death, Mad Dwarf, Sleeping Dogs Wake, Solanas ¦ Solanas, Leisure Hive, early Naevus, but it is quite impersonal and indeed impertinent to affiliate any of these unique bands with anything apart from their own self sufficient intimacy and affliction.

An amazing band.

LUCKY THIRTEEN ....IT'S THE MARCH VIOLETS.

This year has seen a return of The March Violets to the public eye, live work, and more notably a year where they are actually undertaking for the first time since their inception, the recording of their debut lp, something they have promised will be special, personal, and something that their core of fans have pledged to fund, as these are very weird times that we all live in.

I spoke to Simon D their founder, as I will be speaking to Rosie and Tom, closer to the time of their live return in November, about past, present, and future, and the burdens between. I have rarely ever read a set of responses as pithy, as honest and as exciting as the following. A man of exceptional voice. This is also the first interview with the band in over twenty years, and is something of an honour I feel.

Over to Mr. Denbigh at The Radiant Lodge ...

When you formed The March Violets, what was the climate like in Leeds, in the UK, and to what extent did that have an impact on what you were doing?

Leeds: it was the dawn of the '80s. Things were getting a bit darker, the politics were what was driving the darkness. The Tories and Thatcher were beginning to rape the country and smash opposition by changing the rules and forcing I'm Alright Fuck You capitalism down everyone's throats, "Economics are the method; the object is to change the heart and soul." Thatcher 1981. Something to think about when assessing this new round of Tories perhaps.... Moving Goalposts? Deja Vu? Leopards/Spots etc. The aftermath of Punk was still washing through, still fighting the British Movement with the Anti Nazi league up to early '81. The Empire Struck Back and Leeds was Bowied up, and New Romanticism was the hip thing, embryonic Soft Cell were breaking through and all around was Tainted Love. Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, Magazine, The Gun Club, The Cramps, Gina X, Mad Max 2, it all made sense.

I guess by then I'd got really fed up with the commercialism of Punk, there was this new wave of studded-jacket clones, and sugar coating it to make it a "positive" I have always attempted to not get pigeon-holed. There were a few northern bands who were about to be lumped together by the press and start what would become labelled "Goth" but there was no real intent. John Peel was massively important at that time, I think Danse Society had a session in late '81 then in mid '82 Southern Death Cult, the Violets, and The Sisters in quick succession and the floodgates opened. I remember I sent John Peel a load of potted African Violets by Interflora and put a cassette in with them and got a call from the great man himself going "Err, go on then, suppose you'd better come in" Anyway, there was a surge of stuff south of the border, and The Batcave also opened in 1982 so the lazy London based music press then didn't have to leave the bar to find stuff to write about and so it rolled on.

Another thing that strikes me about the band, is its carnivorous, cum malevolent sense of fun. Could you explain how people in general reacted to this, and what it actually brought to the band?

Well, if Rock and Roll isn't amusing it's just sad posturing in leather. Everyone, "rock stars" included, should be able to laugh at themselves. I love the very fine line between sarcasm and insults, I think it's a Northern Wit thing in particular, a finely tuned sense of self deprecation and grounding. It has rules. I see it as actually quite gentle humour, never really meant to hurt, just point things out you might want to think about and maybe come back to earth. It's also good to find a humorous relationship between seemingly incongruous or disparate things, to see the ridiculous and entertaining. Some people don't get it, they never will, hopefully they will get off on the music, but it's always good when people understand what you think you are trying to say. Wit is an old word, it also meant 'to know'. I think it's probably where we get Witch from... Wit Craft, but I'm off on one now so back to the plot...

How did it affect the band, I don't know really. Nobody said anything to me, but I did apparently look quite menacing emerging out of the smoke so nobody said much anyway.

You had a vague affiliation with The Sisters Of Mercy to begin with, as you released your first two singles on Merciful Release, and played live with them reasonably regularly : did you see yourselves very differently to each other, and indeed in relation to everyone else, and what happened after that relationship ceased to be?

OK, early Natural History:

I'd started a band called the Complex, I think we did 2 gigs then the other members left Leeds. Then I started looking for new members, Lawrence came first, we tried out a few people, including a flute player and Choque Hussain on drums. It wasn't really working. I bought a DR55 drum machine to write with and we had the basis of the rhythm section. I met Rosie and Tom came down from Scotland where he had been in a band with Lawrence. We recorded some tracks and sent them to Peelie.

Craig Adams and I were living together (not biblically).I'd seen Andrew around at the F Club etc. I guess we (the Violets and Sisters) gravitated together through that, similar tastes and using the same studio in Bridlington. I sorted out a distribution deal with Red Rhino and we released the Religious as Hell EP on Merciful Release in '82. We did only a few gigs with the Sisters, one at Keighley Funhouse? One in York, one at the Klubfoot in London, I can't remember any others at the moment.

I never really thought about the Violets in relation to anyone else. It just was. I was pretty naive at the time, and filled with utter self belief and drive. I didn't know anything about the Music Business.

As for The Sisters and the split ... no comment.

Hmmmm. Well, that's what I thought too, but I'm an egomaniac, and you are obviously very perceptive but also quite mad.. Anyway, I'm not sure whether people were as confused as you say, and as I said before I can't really blame anyone for being intimidated when I'm lumbering out of the smoke at them. I don't look like the poet and beautiful person I see in the mirror. Ha. Though I do think I write some pretty great lyrics and tunage, even now. Certain members of the Violets were definitely confused and became driven by the lure of money and that glowing "record deal". It always happens when commercial interests attract the sharks. I know that now. The pressures during the end of my involvement were horrible... "Wear this, see the hair stylist, write more flowery bollocks that the record companies will suck up, do another pointless gig in London for yet more A&R lackeys". The mad dash to become a more viable product, a pop band. I've never had a problem with pop music, but by that I think Bowie, Beatles, Bolan, the Clash and the Kinks. Three dimensional pop music. I can't stand vapid crap and going through the motions, and that frankly was where we were heading. I should have been stronger. I'm sorry.

Ok, some shift to the left now, with the ‘modern section’ …

The gig in 2007 was a resounding success. How did you feel stepping back onto that stage again after so long apart, and away from the music / gigging arena?

The gig was very weird for me. I was absolutely phasing from lack of sleep and erm other stuff. I had taken on far too much of the organisational tasks and as the concert drew nearer it just grew like some massive tsunami. So it was something like cooking a complicated dinner for friends, you don't really enjoy it yourself. But I'm really happy that it went down well. The atmosphere was fantastic and special, and just what I was after. A HUGE thankyou to everyone involved, the bands, the audience, everybody.

Do you think people have actually started to get what you were doing at last, or should I say a broader section of people?

Probably not.

What are your thoughts on the contemporary music scene - I know that you are rather fond of some friends of mine Ulterior?

They came on tour with the Sisters. I can testify that they did it the hard way, drove around Europe and nearly froze to death in a van parked by the ice sea outside the gig in Finland. Whether you like their music or not they fucking mean it and put their asses on line, and that to me is everything. And I happen to like their music too. Bonus.

Will you be recording again soon and if so any thoughts on resurrecting Rebirth, or some other form of independent label?

I'd like to record a new Violets LP, the first proper Violets LP. I guess it seems weird at this time when LPs are a fading format due to File-sharing etc. But I have a lot of great songs that have been simmering away for years. Main problem is the cost of getting the 3 of us together, with Tom living in the States. I'm considering asking all our friends to contribute in advance to finance the recording, and make sure that they get an incredible limited edition signed album: somewhat bejeweled, with their picture on it somewhere perhaps. Maybe we could combine it with a gig. What do you think? That's an open question.(That has now been answered).

What are your thoughts on the Trinity recordings? After the initial shock, I thought it was fantastic.

I think they were what they were and that was mainly down to me, and yes we could have done old school stuff and that would have probably gone down a bit better but in my head we never did "formulaic" originally so why start now?. I've been making Hip Hop and Electronic music for the last dozen or so years, so some of that is going to spill over. I could very easily write something "in the style of" and if I want to I will, but I don't really do cynical without a sense of humour, and those who are currently regurgitating sad limp swirly crap should know better. Come on, blow our fucking minds with something exceptional and original. Don't just trot it out. Right, having set myself up for a massive kicking as soon as I release the first track that sounds anything like the original Violets stuff I'm happy! It's all about the Implosion.

FOUR CAME HOME / PASSION OF ICE - SPLIT 7" (1986)

I feel just very recently that I am recovering some of my abundant and child like passion and sincere and honest creativity again, after too long and nearly fatal a drought - too many things to cope with and they aren't for here anyway, but not at all great for my soul at all. At all.

Have been communicating at length with someone who has rather encyclopaedic and somewhat autistic zeal for the dust mote specialities of the art and music that we love ... and felt again the desire to soar once more upon hearing Broken Faith, Swan Death and Ambelian again, and in particular upon listening to Beg For Eden and Passion Of Ice for the very first time ... Passion Of Ice in particular and a band that also had its existence within the regional scene to which I grew up with from a very young age, and obviously not as big as The Sisters Of Mercy (who would want to be after Altamont : A Festival Of Remembrance?) or even Ghost Dance or even The Second Coming at the more then intimate but now rare cult item, slide of the scale.

Thanks. I already said this, and you know who you are, and is not too difficult to work out for quite a few others ... but anyway.

Four Came Home were ok, but Passion Of Ice had so much inherent fire, and boundless potential, more raw and bleeding than a band like The Bolshoi, or even Chat Show, and in my opinion what The Sound would sound like if they, in my humble but contentious opinion, didn't sound so 'way hey', still one part too many Nick Drake for myself, and two drops too much away from the perfect formula for B Movie, or horror of horrors The Railway Children ... I like them (The sound that is) but still don't adore them ...

Anyway it might appear that I am blathering now, and but what the heck etc but and bye bye !

I find it hard trying to dig anything Hyperium, as hard to dig as my own mausoleum plot out of granite, using a banana.

Apart from Sleeping Dogs Wake's latter period ahem ... 'C-D's' (blech blech) there is fuck all of any musical worth at all on that vanguard of German darkwave dross fnacstore tosh 'label' (?), apart from this.

I am genuinely attracted to this 12" primarily due to its absolute rareness, but there is fortunately a killer of a song 'From The Fog' at the end of Side Two, that salvages the entire back catalogue of Hyperium from being akin to a saucy version of Camerata Mediolanense. Just have a look at the intensely personalised catalogue number. Even WEA are less corporate.

By the way I do love the name Love Is Colder Than Death, and always thought it was very very unfortunate that turgid and untalented UK goff rockers Restoration (of what exactly huh ? huh?) appropriated it as a song title, if that is what passes for a song that is (and 'Yes' it does in 2010 ok ja? :/ ).

I love provocative detergency.

It's wild and radical and terribly old fashioned I've heard.

In bi-turns, lacerating, tribal fare come, drifting, haunting, elegiac. Supremely rare these days, with other tracks appearing only on a Canadian tape sampler Underneath Vancouver, which continues the themes of the A Side, more aggressive and blistering fodder, and also features diverse acts ranging from Blair Petrie and early Skinny Puppy, through to similar souls Emily and Family Plot.

Overall, and genuinely excellent, another band that should have been.

Another Species are Erica and Nic, and they are both good friends of mine. These are the first and third releases by the band, the second I will upload when I can locate it.

Their music is undiluted pure Goth, in the very best sense, original, spirited and special, as you will find out when you listen. To be quite honest this is the best music to have come out of this genre in years. Musically there is an influence of Sleeping Dogs Wake, even Diamanda Galas, but the end result is nothing copied, borrowed or learned ... Another Species.

Definitely the best band I have heard this year, Larve have a direct approach, do not mince words and have a sound that is essential, and original, inspired by the brutal diy of Malaria!, UT and Die Haut.

Here is a statement release from Petra, Larve's vocalist and constructivist :
The band was formed in Rijeka, Croatia in late 2008. It originally consisted of three, and today two very young girls, as follows: Petra Baricevic (bass and vocals) and Vida Fucak (keyboards). Instead of drums they use the rhythm machine.
The girls draw the inspiration for their music from ingenious works in which imagination, ideas and creativity make such a powerful impact on them that they encourage even deeper awareness of vanity of human thought today. They admire various artists, from musicians and poets to film directors. Hitchcock is the main culprit for creating their new song.
When it comes to the actual creation and song writing, Petra says the songs breathe down her neck. When they appear, they urge to get out – and they simply do it. She sometimes even turns it on its head and assigns different meaning to the words that crop up. As if thoughts were a cabaret – you get a headache from all the tossing and turning of those annoying people in pig-like costumes.
Although it is often said that Larve give out the oldish sound, the sound of old Rijeka's bands, they experience music uniquely as they march on, having the same basis for evermore. „It would be nonsense to stick to the same sound throughout the whole career and do everything in a similar manner. It is boring and innovation-lacking“ – Petra comments.
The group has so far had more than 20 public appearances. They tend to create mystical atmosphere and communicate discrete messages. They have played in Slovenia and Croatia. The concerts of greater importance have been those with the band "Mrtvi kanal" in Rijeka and with the famous Rijeka's band "Let 3" in Ljubljana.

Castration Squad were a six piece all female death punk band from California, who pre-dated most of the other deathrock bands by a good year or two, and whose line up included Dinah Cancer, who would shortly after its dissolution form 45 Grave, and I believe even Patricia Morrison very briefly.

Their music is nothing short of totally refreshing. Dripping in tar-black fuck you radical hate and eloquent passive aggressive / aggressive death boredom, it just makes me wish yet again that there were still bands this for real any more. Such a disgusting shoddy fucked up fact of life.

This is one of those releases that many have wondered about and eulogised. Myself included. The mythology is intact, but supersedes the actual artefact. Huge prices being paid on the collectors market, people even fighting in specialist shops, one of the 'Holy Grails' of the genre.

Mmm, well, not quite. The second track Bop stands out, and while the ideas are good, some of them seem strained and not worked out fully enough. Essentially what we have here is something equivalent to early Sins Of The Flesh, not as great as Nervous Choir, or even Month Of Sundays, but something that certainly remains an integral part of genre mythology and mystery abounds.

First two releases by New Zealand band Nocturnal Projections, who shared members with Children's Hour and This Kind Of Punishment. The music on these two 12"s is quintessential gloomy post punk, not dissimilar from either Children's Hour and This Kind Of Punishment, maybe even more raw around the edges. In terms of comparisons, it's hard to be fair really, as this is really excellent stuff. I'll tell you what, I'll leave the comparisons out again.

Essentially a re-package of Somewhere In Europe's self distributed and generally unknown cassette releases 'Somewhere In Europe', 'Dark Days', 'Know Your Enemy' and 'Liturgy Of Anguish', along with one off compilation appearances, 'Gestures' was released on Death In June's NER label, in the light of Andrea James' involvement with 'The World That Summer' album, and as the title suggests, to be a cynical recollection of secret works only emphasised by a higher level collaborative showcase.

Their music is hard to package, often hard and uncomfortable listening, and as bleak and unsettling, as it is cryptic, portentous, and confusing. Their sound is stark to the point of death equivalent to a slow and intentional, nonchalant vampirism, and pretty much the soundtrack to the most terrifying and sunken nightmares, which you can only remember in pieces at a later time, which feels like a cold sweat partial deja vu.

The Silent Assassin is as pure and close as it gets to accessible and conventional, which makes their music perfectly suitable for the limited and fluctuating NER roster, well up to the point of that roster becoming safer and more identifiable.

Taking their name from the last line in Lewis Carroll's poen 'Jabberwocky' , and cutting a fine line in slicing dark angular guitar music, this is the first release from Mome Rath, and along with the VISA cassette, definitely their best.

The music is redolent of The Cure around Seventeen Seconds and early Wire, who were obviously strong influences at this stage in their existence, like so many other bands at the time.

Often dismissed unfairly as Death In June copyists etc etc, somewhat unfairly as Gary Carey's collaborations with Death In June followed Joy Of Life's own first release, and mainly centred around predicatbly lazy bullshit journalism, due to their sonorous and bass heavy pessimistic leanings, which normally mention the immortal two words 'Joy Division' as well. These records are the two quintessential releases from Joy Of Life, for those of you previously unaware of their work.

The music is very heavy, and very gloomy : thoroughly desperate fare, yet heartfelt and honest, not for the faint and weak hearted. I always found them very personally affecting, very emotional, very aware. Anyway, listen for yourself.

Before their later techno-ish rumblings Eskimos & Egypt released this 7", their first, something in-between their home town heritage, and the Factory Records stable, and pastoral second generation UK Goth à la The Fifteenth. The same direction that the Sheffield band Screaming Trees would also follow around the time of Tangiers, although they were considerably more acerbic.

This 7" would not be out of place on Lively Art Records.

This is easily on a par with the better acts on L'Invitation Au Suicide, the grimier, and more twisted end of goth á la Les Provisoires, with elements of Gestalt, and easily one of the best French bands I have ever heard. More fully realised than a lot of other acts of a similar ilk, and just the right degree of lacerating.

Time to get down to that old chestnut again, but 'surprise surprise', no available information documented about this act, not even on the normally comprehensive French New Wave site. One may only wonder.

This was released on the excellent Krezimikroid label, who also released one offs by Message, Uncertain Call and Anechoic Chamber; this was released in an oversized zip-lock plastic bag with A5 lyrics insert, and the cassette itself interred within its own individualised plastic casing. A genuine lust item.

Following on from a number of the last few posts, Ritual Dos Sádicos Volumes I (especially) and II, follow on rather neatly from the heavier side of the French '80's underground, that I have taken time to showcase here recently, and contain a number of acts that are scarcely remembered, and little well known, such as the incredible A.R.T. (Art Remains Tangible), who are probably the most devoutly stark of all the French acts from this time, and whose VISA cassette release I have heard whispered was only ever available in the sum of 50 copies. 12" Split mini album with Beruruier Noir, although you can get the Berurier Noir tracks elsewhere, and I don't want to have to take this down again.

Brittle, tense, rousing cold wave, recalling but not emulating other acts at the same time such as Ausweis and early Charles De Goal, I believe apart from compilation appearances this is their only official vinyl outing, which is a shame. From what I can discern Guernica shared a guitarist with the aforementioned Berurier Noir, who went on to become relatively huge, both in France and in Germany.

Just a brief note that the two tapes of Corpses As Bedmates have unfortunately been removed, upon the artists' request. I am still unclear what objection there is to these being included here, as I would have thought they were confidently 'at home' so to speak, but so be it. It is not for me to reason why, particularly as they are both unavailable, were extremely limited in the first instance, and from what I can discern, are not going to be reissued. Oh well ... oh well.

Onto something else entirely.

If you enjoyed the first Bossa Luce tape release, from some time ago, then I am sure this post will be of interest to you. Again another T.T.I.C.C. Contingent act L'Avis G821.

Their music, if you can call it music, treads fiercely across all borders, at times an anodyne drill, at others a hysterical murder of clatterings, the instinct behind the ferocity being what matters, and what is discernible, rather than the conventional fixtures of available lyrical disseminations, and musical conjectures. I suppose it is like deciphering what message a bird eating spider is sending you when, it is facing in the opposite direction facing a glass wall, but still nonchalantly lifts up its hind-legs to spray hairs at your feeding hand. Extra sensory : sublimation.

To some, this would be ugly, but I still insist that it's the thought that counts.

Their gigs generally resulted in the climactic event of vocalist Gentle Ihor, removing his clothes and getting 'Naked', but please do not let that put you off. This is the first cassette from 1989, and the first and best of three releases, the second being the blue 'Naked' cassette, and the third being a hugely avoidable dance 12".

I hope you enjoy this. The third track 'Songs and Dances' is a particular beauty.

Natural History by many is seen as an album but was simply a way of tidying up the early and quickly deleted singles, with some extra tracks that hadn't fitted the singles releases, and was never a proper album therefore. Anyway :

Understanding has to be one of the scariest records of all time, reaching a particularly crucial point during Lilith Calling, where Lilith arrives in the bedroom and cuts Karin's spinal cord in half.

Threnody follows similar suit, only even more sickly, violent and full on morose in bi turns, Sleeping Dogs Wake obviously having learned their art more fully, and on the brink of something. Either terrible, or new, or maybe even both.

Only to substantially change in sound and direction, lighter but still impeccably heavy only with a more ragged dance infused sound, sonorous pastoral moments, and a more insular yet synaesthetic, metaphorical painting, by Up! and from then on. This would mark a total change of direction by Sugar Kisses, which I may or may not post later.

Their live shows were some of the most claustrophobic and intense I have ever seen, even tipping Swans at the time, the band appearing in tight cod pieces, with gaffer taped nipples, and in unpleasant red and green strobe lighting. Shrieking and convulsing. I backed away from them. I was impressed. I am going to sound geriatric now, but they don't make them like that any more.

This scared the living shit out of me when I heard it many many moons ago, just after its release: 'I'll haunt you, I'll haunt you, Until your fresh young skin, Crawls back off your skull and the maggots step in - TOYS ! FOR ALICE!'

Fucking hell. The English Skinny Puppy they were dubbed. Nowhere near.

Far far scarier.

Still exceptionally creepy, even to this day, as is the majority of this early work, and dripping with charisma, lack of charm, and ugly black ooze. Way way way too left field for the poor rock contingency then and now. Church of Cultist Cabala, homosexuality, irreversible hexes, transexuality, black magic, rot and death more death, sado masochism, Lilith lore, nursery rhymes gone to Hell, graveyard sodomy, sex murder, mental illness, Jinny Greenteeth horrorshow realism done so so well.

The albums will follow shortly. See what you think - if you dare.

Maybe if you listen hard enough you may invoke them back into popular existence. One can hope.

Something old, something new; something borrowed, something blue.

Drum machine driven, female fronted indie-goth, from the UK. Just this one tape and that is it. Some influence of The March Violets on here through to the earlier releases by The Primitives and even The Shop Assistants, with just a smidgeon of Look Back In Anger and Ghost Dance shaken into the mix. Not totally original but good solid stuff nonetheless. I could imagine The Plumed Serpent supporting bands like The Fifteenth, The Hiding Place and Kasai Chant at the time, which I am probably quite sure that they did.

SIXTEENS - THE GLACIER EP (2008)

Nobody has quite filled the hole like Sixteens over the last decade. Playing live with them was something else, their live shows - uncomfortable and intense, and the fact that they are genuinely and uniquely strange and incredible, and extremely darkly beautiful doesn't hurt at all. They have their niche and they fill it with nuance. And while other contenders stagger by, no-one really touches their incredible little galaxy at all.

This was the most recent release by them, and was quickly almost instantaneously deleted. At some point soon I hope I will rip the debut album, simply titled 'Sixteens' and the other unavailable release by Houses, which was a previous project by Kristo Bal, one half of the current Sixteens stable nucleus. The latter is particularly something to behold. I won't give anything more away now, except that.

Fear Incorporated is the rather sick baby of one William Westwater and flanked by ex Sex Gang Children Terry Macleay (also of Power To Dream) and Cam Campbell (also of Veda), to produce a car crash sound, one part early The Vanishing, and dominated by a vocal which recalls the grand guignol histrionics of Bone Orchard, and Kommunity FK.

The subject matter is equally macabre, and handled well, as it would be really.

Intensely gloomy, primitive, dischordant, seductive Do It Yourself from 1980. When anything seemed, and was possible. I just find it such a singular shame that there are no bands around any more called things like Idol Death, making songs like Sticky Death, without being just ever so slightly getting it wrong, bland, trust-fund, hung up and derivative SCUM. So yes, the name would probably be something more like Idle Deathh or somesuch. Tres Ironische.

Listening to this just makes me want to scream, "Cold Cave FUCK OFF!"

Shame I haven't got my old photographic evidence still, but yes indeed, The Stone Roses, like other indie stalwarts Embrace, Powder, The Charlatans et al, were originally a rather excellent (mid '80's) Goth band, as this release is testament.

Martin Hannett produced, suitable 4AD inspired collage cover artwork, and all the essential sonic and lyrical credentials. Like I was saying wish I still had the old photographs ... all paisley, leather jeans, crimped hair etc.

Tribal grinding all female post punk / goth band from the States. Shamelessly lumped in with the New York No Wave movement, despite the fact that they came just after that period and have very little in common at all with that. Scraping, grinding, CASTRATING music. Feverish, borderline and hyper-maniacal. Their modus operandi changed somewhat after this but the blistering energy continued. Hugely unacknowledged even now, despite the fact that their influence can be heard and felt amongst so many inferior pretenders today.

Highly sought after now, this is a weird one. Absolutely no information whatsoever and even the information on discogs is largely missing, only a few pictures and a small write up in some of Mick Mercer's books.

Yes, the name is French, the country of release is stated to be France (although I volunteer this is an assumption based upon the band's name), but I suspect that this was an English band, particularly as they played predominantly London venues in the late '80's and because the music and delivery is very very English sounding, half Elephant Talk, half early Killing Joke tribal throttle.

Any more information would be appreciated but is not essential.

Geile Tiere's live performances were notorious and drew from and incorporated elements of Butoh, nudity, sadomasochistic gay sex, transvestism, blood ritual, excretion, mimicry, as well as other taboo areas of non orthodox performance art, so to refer to them as 'Not only is it unencouraging as dance music, Geile Tiere goes nowhere with no flair' (c.o. Trouser Press.com) just goes to show the growing ignorance of our modern digital age.

'Unencouraging' isn't even a fucking word in the English language, and the user is far too unintelligent to be breaking any established rules of lexis.

I won't go into details here, about what they sounded like or why etc etc .. just document what they released and make it widely available. They are simply one of those 'bands' who to describe, would just go nowhere, is silly, and is thus futile. Furthermore, I am just a later consumer of their music. I would imagine to have been around them, and to have witnessed their art unfolding, would have given me a much more unique and pertinent perspective.

This is something I can relate to. Sex Gang Children without a doubt shaped and changed my life so massively it is ridiculous to even go into details here. Andi became a close personal friend and this is something I value immensely to this day. He offered me such insight into myself I am still reeling today. I don't mention this lightly. It is something I very much cherish and hold dear. I supported Sex Gang Children once as Andi had asked me to get something together .. the product was The Dead.

This is an extension of the violence and godlike beauty that Sex Gang Children had already achieved by this point in time, and is definitely one of Andi's definable opuses. The keys and piano are also a healthy departure to the heavy synth work that Piero Balleggi had achieved with Neon by this point, and sounds like a refreshing musical departure for his extreme musicianship, one I have heard will be revisited shortly with new Dirty Roseanne material.

This is for Andi. First and foremost. An anteater in a world of termites.

Seems like a dream now that stuff like this was given the backing it deserved from labels like Crammed Discs and L'Invitation Au Suicide. Ostensibly a side project of Dave Roberts and Nigel Preston, from Sex Gang Children and Death Cult, Carcrash International mutated out and from the initial concept, which was carried on The Whip compilation album, for all intents and purposes a showcase record of other talent from the original 'Batcave' / positive punk scene, that became a creature quickly vying for its own attention, stretching its own angular and sinewy tendons in a variety of directions, sometimes making it happen, at others distracting and frustrating, but nonetheless remarkable in its vision and directness, if not its ultimate direction.

The following are therefore the three 12" singles that were released between 1983 and 1985, and which are unavailable elsewhere still, and the 'return of', which is an altogether different story and shows the band working at full potential. Sadly ignored in general.

Terribly unpopular, atonal, dirgey, tuneless, lo fi stuff from Hamburg, Germany. Clearly influenced by the then massively unfashionable Velvet Underground and Suicide, 39 Clocks have some parallels (in terms of their appeal) to other UK bands that never really got anywhere such as The Cassandra Complex.

Some make it, some don't. Another one of those massively underrated German acts, like Kastrierte Philosophen and Blue Kremlin, who just didn't cut it in the popular consciousness. There is a lot to be said in favour of this.

Unfortunately this one is a bit of a mystery to me, as I am not entirely sure if this is indeed the 7" (although I am reasonably reliably informed it is), yet have no cover scans for it or any other information, due to a somewhat cagey bird, so if I am wrong please holler. Always thought that they got to demo stage but unlike Dormannu and Let's Wreck Mother, never actually put out any vinyl. Help!

Perennial Batcave band, oddly experimental, cutely exciting and just different. I know they played at the legendary Batcave club several times and came from the wreckage of the aforementioned Dormannu and Let's Wreck Mother but that's it really. Maybe it will remain one of those life's little mysteries.

The product of a sabbatical for Terry Macleay from Sex Gang Children, and Alex Green, who I believe was involved with the Warehouse Club in Leeds in the early '80's.

Bodies Gone still remains a chilling slab of sexual loathing, the product of cold psychosis, of necrotic libido. It still gives me the creeps to this day, particularly as I relate to it, the vocal refrain of 'you're only here because I'm lonely' seeping through the skin and under, like carbon monoxide in a burning house full of sleepers. I used to listen to this on heavy rotation with the first album by Strafe Fur Rebellion, and Dull Day by Bible For Dogs, in a purposely cold attic flat, with the curtains drawn, twitching around in the twilight to the amphetamine throb. Horny as hell. Cold as ice.

All of a sudden I feel impeccably nostalgic once again.

Not so fond of the excessive gloomfare on the A-Side but Wandering is an exceptional song, with a nice line of Xmal buzzsaw guitar kill, and a galloping bass, which carries the out of cue vocal along intimately. Visceral fodder, well worth documenting. And oh, I do hope you don't mind?
